Rolling Tray Sizes Explained: Which One Fits Your Setup
11 Oct 2026
Tray sizing is loose across brands, so "medium" means little on its own. These are the ranges you will actually encounter.
The usual sizes
- Small / pocket — roughly 5x7 in. Fits in a bag. Enough room for one task and not much else.
- Medium — roughly 7x11 in. The most common size, and the one most people should buy. Room for a grinder, papers and a tray of material at once.
- Large — roughly 11x14 in and up. A work surface rather than a tray. Good on a desk, awkward anywhere else.
Materials
- Metal — the standard. Rigid, cheap, wipes clean, and the rolled lip actually contains spills.
- Silicone — flexible and non-stick, which makes it the sensible choice for anything sticky. Will not stay flat under a lid.
- Wood — looks best, absorbs residue, hardest to clean.
- Glass — easiest to clean completely, and the one you will eventually drop.
Features worth paying for
- A raised lip. A flat sheet is not a tray.
- Rounded corners — the corners are where residue collects and where a square tray is hardest to clean.
- A magnetic lid if the tray will be moved or stacked.
- A matching storage container — a tray plus an airtight container covers most setups.
